Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT INGREDIENTS ARE IN SHANTI CANDLES?

Shanti candles are made with a coconut wax blend, all natural essential oils, phthalate free fragrance oils, cotton wicks, and no dyes. These candles are as simple & natural as they come!

WHAT IS A COCONUT WAX BLEND?

Made from a 'high melt point' coconut oil then blended with a small portion of other natural vegetable waxes. All coconut wax must be mixed with others to bring up the melt point in order to use as a candle. Using the coconut oil as the main base, leads to a wax that will burn evenly, slowly and smells cleaner. But the best part is, it is the most sustainable and healthy option for wax on the market. Learn more about why coconut wax is better here.

DO YOUR CANDLES CONTAIN CHEMICALS?

No! All of our ingredients are the cleanest and toxin free to ensure the safety while burning your candle.

There are five main “hazard groups” that we simply don't allow in our candles.

Phthalates: The 'everywhere' chemical that has concerning health effects isn't in our candles!

Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer.

Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer.

Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects.

Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs.

Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.

ARE YOUR CANDLES VEGAN & CRUELTY FREE?

Yes, they are! We are happy to report that neither myself nor our suppliers engage in animal testing & our candles contain no animal-derived ingredients.

HOW LONG WILL MY CANDLE BURN?

Burn times will vary depending on a different factors, however, based on 3-4 hour increment burn testing, here are the average burn times:

12 oz // 65+ hours

1.5 oz // 15+ hours

Note: If you keep your candle burning all day long, it will surely burn through faster than our projected timeframes.

HOW FRAGRANT ARE YOUR CANDLES?

Due to the natural nature of these candles, they are not overwhelming and can be used every day. We suggest only burning your candle for 3-5 hours.

WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Getting essential oils from plants is done with a process called distillation, most commonly by steam or water, where many parts of the plants are being used, including the plant roots, leaves, stems, flowers, or bark.

After distillation, the outcome is a highly concentrated portion of essential oil, which will have the characteristic fragrance and properties of the plant from which it was extracted, and contain the true essence of the plant it came from. This includes the smell, but also the plant’s healing properties and other plant characteristics. Our candles provide aromatherapy benefits as we use essential oils in our candle making process.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BURN MY CANDLE?

Trim your wick. Always allow the melt pool to reach the edges of the jar before extinguishing. Doing so not only allows for even burning, but prevents "tunneling" and wax from building along the sides of the jar, ensuring product quality and longevity.

DO I NEED TO TRIM THE WICK?

Yes!!Always!! Every time!! Be sure to trim the wick to 1/4" before each lighting to prevent wick curling. Trim your wick with a simple finger pinch or by using scissors or a proper wick trimmer. As a safety precaution, never leave wick trimmings in your candle jar!

MY CANDLE HAS TURNED YELLOW, WHAT HAPPENED?

Our wax is made from a coconut blend with no additives or blends. We recommend keeping your candle at room temperature out of direct light. If you keep your candle in direct sunlight or UV lighting for an extended period of time, you may notice the wax turning yellow. This is completely normal. To ensure keeping the clear white, keep out of lengthy direct exposure.

MY CANDLE LOOKS BLOTCHY, IS SOMETHING WRONG?

If you see what appears to be a "gap" between the wax and the glass, or white speckling on the edge of the candle, you're seeing what we call "spotting" or "frosting". These are both totally normal characteristics of coconut wax, and frosting is in fact a good indicator that the wax is actually 100% natural wax (not some yucky blend with a paraffin wax). Frosting and spotting occur when candles are exposed to extreme temperature changes during shipment, and is generally more noticeable as they are natural and we do not add dyes or colorant. We will never send out a candle with major frosting or spotting, but we have no control over what occurs in transit. No need to worry, frosting and spotting will in no way affect how your candles burn! Because we can't control Mother Nature, we are unable to replace candles that have frosted in transit. Think of it as a unique characteristic of being handmade with coconut wax and no dyes added!
